"During Medical School at Johns Hopkins, I got to see a number of patients with heart disease, and it was shocking to me that one of the most easily reversible diseases also happened to be one of the greatest killers in America".

ABOUT Dr. Rasi

Dr Rasi Wickramasinghe, MD, PhD, FACC, commonly known to his patients simply as "Dr Rasi" is an Interventional Cardiologist and Cardiovascular Disease Specialist practicing in Houston, Texas.

He currently is a member of Houston Methodist Cardiology Associates and is affiliated with Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

As a board certified physician in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Interventional Cardiology and Echocardiography, Dr Wickramasinghe is passionate about not only treating heart disease, but also in how genetic differences across different populations affect the incidence of heart disease. For example, people of Hispanic and South Asian descent are at several-fold higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke than Caucasian and African Americans. He is interested in understanding why these specific ethnic groups are at high risk and what they can do to reduce those risk factors and the incidence of heart attacks, diabetes and strokes. Importantly, he believes that there are simple, easy to understand, dietary strategies that can minimize these risks, and he is invested in disseminating this knowledge to his patients.

In addition to using simple, dietary strategies to avoid heart disease, Dr Rasi is also highly knowledgeable and skilled at treating heart disease when it occurs. He specializes in the comprehensive treatment of coronary artery disease including medical therapy, and treatment of occluded arteries with balloon angioplasty, stent implantation and in the use the arteries of the wrist (transradial procedures) which greatly increases patient comfort.

He is also a specialist in the newer techniques in interventional cardiology including the replacement of heart valves in a minimally invasive manner, without the use of surgery (a technology known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR).

Originally a native of Sri Lanka, Dr Rasi received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in California, where he was a President's Scholar and was the recipient of the Firestone Medal. He then was accepted into the Medical Scientist Training Program of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he spent the next seven years on his MD and PhD degrees.

After finishing medical school, Dr Rasi entered the prestigious Osler Medical Training program at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he trained in Internal Medicine. He then moved to Philadelphia, to train in Cardiovascular Diseases, Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart Disease at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr Wickramasinghe is an elected Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.  He has authored and published over thirty peer reviewed journal articles, abstracts, book chapters and has presented his work at numerous national and international conferences.

He currently lives in Sugar Land, Texas with his wife Dinoo, and their two children - Himali & Sohan.
